“If only helped me perform well in academia but

“If curiosity is hunger, then knowledge is the food, and the achievement of it is satisfaction.”

My philosophy of life has always been to satisfy my hunger for knowledge. I believe the satisfaction in the achievement of a goal is beyond all pleasure. The curiosity to learn has not only helped me perform well in academia but has also made me work in a variety of field before I finally realized the direction of satisfaction. It was my keen interest to explore the application of the fluid dynamics in the automotive sector that took me to Maruti Suzuki India Limited for two months summer internship. The problems encountered during this period not only helped me improve my skills but also gave a direction to my academic aspect. I was equally involved in both computation as well as experimentation, but it was here that I realized the potential of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD as a tool not only helps reduce the experimental efforts but also gives eyes for the unseen physics, but as a tool CFD lacks in many aspects, one such is turbulence modeling where we have several models all with its limitation sometimes making this tool unreliable.

This is where I decided to embark on the journey to becoming master in the field of Computational Fluid dynamics which would require augmentation of my knowledge and engineering skills in mechanical engineering which is why I choose to pursue M.Sc. in mechanical engineering with orientation in Aero-hydrodynamics. After the internship, I emerged as a focused and persistent candidate working to enhance my skills in mathematics and computer science to improve my understanding of CFD. I took coursework in Mathematical modeling and simulation, Finite element and finite volume methods, optimization techniques, and computer programming which helped me during my academic as well as non-academic projects.

My diligent work and growing interest also won the commendation from various professors who offered me with proper guidance and suggestions to help me achieve my future goals. In addition to this, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi also offered me a complete fee waiver for a short-term professional course on product design and innovation using CFD and FEM. With the proper guidance of professors, I started working on projects, taking necessary courses and gaining knowledge.

One of the prominent projects was my undergraduate thesis project entitled Physics-based modeling of arthroscopic laser surgery in which a 2µm holmium-YAG LASER was incident to tissue element which was modeled as a porous media with multiphase flow through it. The resulting temperature distribution was used to estimate the depth and width of cell death. In subsequent studies, the LASER parameters were varied within the limit of a commercially available LASER to suggest optimum operating condition. This study was entirely done using commercial solver COMSOL to increase its reach and applicability.

Another notable project was during my summer internship at Tata Research Development and Design Centre (TRDDC) entitled Numerical Modelling of Magneto-Hydrodynamics in Continuous Casting Process. In this project, a continuous slab caster was studied with the application of Electromagnetic Brakes (EMBr) and Electromagnetic Stirrer (EMS). The model was used to investigate the effect of EMBr and EMS on flow pattern, solidification, temperature distribution, macrosegregation. Further, a parametric study of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) depth was carried out to check its impact on impurity inclusion in the final cast product.

The final conclusion was the application of EMBr alters the flow pattern and impurities inclusion in cast product reduces, further with application of EMBr higher casting speed can be obtained without defects. On the other hand the application of EMS increases the homogeneity of the final product which reduces macro-segregation and produces finer grain particles. The SEN depth study suggested that with increase in SEN depth there is reduction in meniscus level fluctuation which causes reduction in impurity inclusion in cast product.

My experience and knowledge tells me that computational fluid dynamics as a field of study has already evolved and it will continue to grow with time. The modern manufacturing industries are highly investing in area of numerical modeling and simulation including CFD as an effort to increase the accuracy and flexibility of their research and development. My wish is to become an expert of the field of CFD and contribute to this growth by developing new adaptive turbulence model which will save the pain of using multiple turbulence models and help in tackling limitations of existing models. Which is why I want to pursue PhD after my M.Sc.

The academia and the projects have prepared me well for research and has highly motivated me to become adroit in the field of computational fluid dynamics. I think the M.Sc. Program in Mechanical Engineering with orientation in Aero-hydrodynamics would be perfect as per my ambition. The comprehensive curriculum will provide me with the required prowess. Through this course I expect to get a good knowledge of mechanical engineering specifically in the area of fluid dynamics and with minors in Computational Science & Engineering I hope to get equally proficient in using and developing CFD solvers. Of special interest to me are the project of Prof. François Avellan in the area of numerical modelling. I wish to contribute to these projects, preferably as a Research Assistant.

I hope you see in me a deserving candidate to study at your honorable institute and you will provide me an opportunity to interact and learn from the students of different cultures and from different corners of the world. I assure you of my dedicated efforts and would prove myself an exceptional student in your program.
