The made a huge mark on the modern fashion.

The style of the ancient
Greeks has become a fashion statement of sorts. The brightly colored clothes
and the exuberant jewelry from the Heroic age in Greece have largely impacted Greek
fashion in the ancient times. The fashion of ancient Greeks has trickled down
over the centuries and has made a huge mark on the modern fashion. The elements
of the ancient Greeks style persevered and translated in modern day wear, even
though the ancient Greeks do not know it now, they are visible on the most
prestigious catwalks, worn and adored by the most influential and beautiful
style icons of this century. An interesting fact to note is that the men and
women in ancient Greece wore almost the same kind of clothes. Their clothes
were often loose fitting and homemade in order to be more comfortable and carry
out their daily chores underneath the warm Greek sun.

Under the category of “Greek
Inspired” we can observe many trends, like the ancient Greek sandal, which takes inspiration from the footwear of the Gladiators.
The Peplos is yet another style which is a popular choice among women of all
ages, which is a one shoulder gown. The Chiton dresses are another item of
style that is very popular. The hair accessories such as Crowns and Headbands called
stefana, was made with leaves, ribbons and small white flowers and was worn
equally by men and women in ancient Greece. This is again a very popular style
derived from the ancient Greeks. Another important accessory in Greece was the
gold leaf crown, which symbolized the purity and status of Greek gods and
goddesses. Grecian jewelry also has had profound influence on the designs of
modern jewelry. The land was abundant in precious stones, and has formed an
important part of all Greek jewelry and other sorts of decorative ornaments. Many
designers and luxury fashion brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Alberta
Ferretti, Alexander Mcqueen and Karl Lagerfeld have and are taking inspiration
from this country and have produced Silk fabrics along with linen fabrics which
are structured yet flowy creations and leather accessories, central point to
many of their collections.

The meaningful act of
self-identification is a presentation of ones physical body which is aimed at
the gaze of others. The Greeks in order to place themselves in the world adorned
their body with cosmetics, clothing, perfume and hairstyles. They asserted the
gaze of the public and insisting that it recognize them too. The Greeks could
embody various identities and intersection of identities , through the
universally understood semiotics of dress. Encompassing all of these, bodies
were used to express sexuality, gender, ethnicity religion, place of origin,
social status, economic status and age etc. Self-presentation was the practice
of manipulating identity, with the result and idea of repositioning oneself on
the matrix and society, in ancient Greece.

I am interested in knowing
how something that prevailed 2000 years ago, can still be visible in todays
fashion industry. Firstly we need to know what is Greek fashion and its meaning
behind why did they dress up in a certain way. So many fashion trends have come
and gone, but this one is so impactful that it is here to stay. I want to analyze
how it has trickled down over the centuries and represented now. I want to show
the different ways they were depicted over the years and what kept it alive to
show up in today’s trends. I want to use content analysis and visual semiotics
as my 2 main research methods, which will ultimately lead to a photo archive of
Greek fashion over the years. It is also important to find out the denotation
and connotation behind these clothes and what are the visual symbols of power
and status in ancient Greek fashion and how has this presented itself in today’s
trends. I’m interested in how it was not forgotten and who or what kept it
alive all this while, Coming towards more of a fashion aspect nowadays, id like
to examine which fashion brands use or have used this style the most, how often
is it repeated over the years and its impact on the wearer and society.

The study of works of signs
and symbols is called semiotics, which can be either individually or grouped in
sign systems that can give us tremendous amount of meaning and insight from
different sources.

Semiotics can help me
translate the visual signs of Greek dressing and can help me deduce different
forms of Greek clothing and their representation in society and the role and power
they held ,what the rich wore, poor wore, how were they differentiated apart
from dress, etc. I want to Examine the visual and symbolic aspects of self
representation in ancient Greece through the study of visual semiotics fashion
words, images, sounds, acts or objects, Everything surrounding us today as
human beings, including our own identities are all molded and manipulated by images,
words, signs and our visual language. I am curious to know how has this
translated over centuries into the fashion that we know on the red carpet and
runaways etc. A message can be broken down into its component parts by the
study of visual semiotics and helps to examine them individually and then in
relationship to one another. It will allow me to look for patterns and helps us
to understand cultural and social conventions. It may Help us to look beyond
the obvious which may not be obvious after all and the power it held, by
observing the visual semiotics through a range of books, magazines, internet
search, galleries etc. It will help understand why it was such a important thing
in their life.

Different forms of clothing carry
different meanings despite the message content. Each form of visual analysis explores
these meanings in the context in which it appears and the manner in which the
subject is represented. Visual language covers a whole range of different social
mediums from, advertising, television to like galleries and theatres. Visual
signs look for the probability of a language that is already in existence and
is used all over already by a large amount of people who may or may not be connected
arts and the media. Most pictures have a double meaning attached to them, the
visual or conventional or the symbolic and arbitrary. I want to find the
denotation and connotation attached to their dressing and Idea of self representation,
which will help me understand and factor in why so many the fashion designers
and brands of todays industry and are so attracted to it.

In relation to pictures, the
study of fashion in ancient Greece as a language is very straight forward and clear
where the visual signs and aspects in clothing and accessories is concerned,
but there is also an expression of deeper thoughts and emotions or even
ambiguous ideas. It is then that the superfluous meaning needs to be cleared by
a linguistic expression and the study of visual semiotic and analysis will help
me do so. Where the study of visuals is concerned we can apply pictorial
semiotics into a constructive linguistic and verbal description while
maintaining confidence in the practice and objectivity. By following the principles
of semiotics we can use it to map out and decode, as a discipline.

Content analysis is a
research method useful for studying various documents and communication
artifacts, like texts of various format, audio, video and pictures, to make
valid inferences by interpreting and material. Content analysis can have several
advantages to researchers, In particular, through content analysis I can detect
which brands and designers have used the fashion of ancient Greece as their
inspiration in their collection and what symbolic and visual aspects of self
representation, clothing and accessories do they want to show in their
collection, by making a picture archive I can track the way when it first appeared
in the fashion industry and make a archive of all the designers who have used
it till date.  Over time through analysis
of visual content, it can provide us with valuable cultural and historic
insights.

It provides insight into language
use and complex models of human thought. Content analysis is an inexpensive and
readily understood research method. It becomes a more powerful and useful tool
when combined with other methods of research like   observation, and use of archival records. It
is very useful for documenting trends over time and especially analyzing the
historical material. Establishing reliability is easy and straightforward and
not too time consuming. The materials can be replicated and usually made
available for others to use, providing them with knowledge. It Quantifies the
meaning of text and visuals, can uncover terminology and replication can be
based on words, images or sounds and is a major source of research on the media.
In conclusion, Of all content analysis scores highest of all the methods of
research.
