concept mapping on conventional teaching method in terms of change in knowledge.
Methods: Pub Med-Medline and EBSCO databases were searched for reviews
in effectiveness of concept mapping on
conventional teaching methods in terms of change in knowledge among nursing
students that are focusing till 2017. Search strategy specific to each
database was used. Results:
Out
of 20 articles, 7 research studies supported that concept mapping was better
than conventional teaching methods.  It
was considered more successful in education of comparison with lecture-based
method. Conclusion: The review concludes that concept mapping should be
used for teaching and evaluation. Concept mapping was more effective on
conventional method in increasing meaningful learning. It can be used as a
clinical teaching-learning method to enhance critical thinking in nursing
students.

1.      INTRODUCTION:

Nursing
education aims not only to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill
to nursing students, but also is expected to improve problem solving, decision
making, and critical thinking abilities in different situations. Traditional
method of education provide limited amount of information to students, related
to many specialties, it does not equip them with the tools that enhance
graduate nurses’ in terms of critical thinking, analysis, prioritize, and for
organizing new information required for effective learning(1).

In
nursing education, critical thinking is one of the major skills which have to
be developed in nursing students. Nurse educators should develop critical
thinking in nursing students (Chabeli, 2010). Nursing students should
develop critical thinking so that they can be able to make judgment in clinical
setting and by which they can use problem solving skill effectively which will
be beneficial for the patient in clinical setting (5).

Concept
mapping is considered most useful tool in education worldwide. It was developed
by Novak in 1970’s for visualizing the relationship among different concepts (Nirmala
& Shakuntala, 2011). Concept mapping is most useful teaching method for
successful learning. Concept map is a visual presentation of the meaningful
relationship between concepts in a hierarchical structure which promote
absorption capacity of the students’ about the certain topics (5).

Concept
mapping is a modern educational method based on the Ausubel’s learning
assimilating theory. According to Ausubel, meaningful learning occurs
when newly learned materials can be linked to the information previously stored
in the brain. Concept mapping helps learners to organizing their knowledge
through series of graphical maps. Novak and Govin defined concept
mapping as a graphical method for presenting a set of concepts placed in a
thematic framework (2).

The
teaching method most commonly practiced at colleges and universities provide
students with theoretical knowledge and they do not prepare them for the real
challenges they are going to face. Concept mapping is an active teaching
method, which can enhance teaching and learning quality of the students(3).

Concept
map is a useful cognitive tool for enhancing a student’s critical thinking by
encouraging students to process information deeply for understanding. It is
always a need to introduce innovative techniques, to make it more easily understandable
subject (3).

Many
studies are showing that concept mapping is effective teaching method to teach
the students. Concept mapping helps to enhance the knowledge of the students
regarding the topic which are taught to the student. It can be evaluated during
the course of teaching and provides effective teaching learning outcomes.
Concept mapping has a positive effect on the student knowledge. Hence,
researcher wants to find the effectiveness of concept mapping on conventional
teaching method in terms of change in knowledge.

1.1
Aim:

The
aim of this review is to find the evidence of effectiveness of concept mapping
on conventional teaching method in terms of change in knowledge.

1.2
Objectives:

·
To assess the evidence of Concept
mapping on other teaching methods among nursing students.

2.
METHODOLOGY:

2.1
Search Strategy methods:

An initial step has been
taken to find out that reviews based on key terms. So this is the reason a
narrative review was undertaken.

The effectiveness of
concept mapping on conventional teaching methods were selected as the area of
interest, and a search was conducted in online database  EBSCO, Pub Med-Medline to retrieve
quantitative research articles published till Aug 2017. Only English language
studies were included. The search terms used in this review were concept mapping and conventional teaching
methods.  The studies were
conducted in many countries, such as the United States, Thailand, Iran,
Germany, and Canada.
