The the economy harmfully. Food waste causes not only

The world
population is increasing day by day, and the growing world population increases
food demand at the same time. However, food waste is not decreasing at all. Food
waste happens everywhere such as in our homes, at school, in the grocery
stores, restaurants, production, and even during transportation. The Huffington
Post says, “According to the USDA’s Economic Research Service, food waste
is estimated to be between 30-40% of all food supply”. This estimates around
133 billion pounds of food which equates to 161 billion dollars (Warren). This
is a huge amount of money that can affect the economy harmfully. Food waste causes
not only economic losses, but it truly affects the hungry. If people do not take
some actions to cut food waste according to the World Resources Institute “By
2050, the world will need about 60 percent more calories per year to feed 9
billion people” (qtd.in Lipinski). So, how can food loss be reduced? What are
some efficient solutions that could be implemented? There are some possible solutions
that everyone could implement to decrease food waste. Food waste can be reduced
by doing simple acts such as adopting good habits and supporting recycling and
donations.

Individual
food waste is one of the biggest causes of economic and environmental loss. Food
waste is a problem that relates to everyone, but many people do not acknowledge
that they are part of the issue. The article “How Do You Solve a Problem Like
Food Waste?” says “Around the world, one-third of the food produced for human
consumption is not actually consumed, according to the United Nation’s Food and
Agriculture Organization” (Mary). Many people believe that most of food waste
comes from places such as restaurants, cafeterias, groceries, or food
production industries. They think that individuals’ food waste does not affect
the issue of loss. However, if we think about our daily life habits we all
produce some level of food waste every day, and it creates enormous effect on the
economy and environment. In fact, “According to a survey by the American
Chemistry Council, the average household throws out $640 of food each year” (Maurie).
If we multiply $640 by the number of householders in U.S we could clearly see
how much money is going out of our pocket to trash. Another economic statistic
shows that “the resulting economic loss is somewhere between 780 billion and 1
trillion dollars a year, while with approximately the same amount of money, or
less, all of the nearly eight million people who are going hungry every day,
could be fed” (Hoek). This is a tremendous economic impact. Food waste also
impacts environment loss. Leftovers, expired foods, or every piece of food
waste produces harmful substances such as chemicals, and uses energy and land. Also,
according to The Huffington Post “Environmental harms of ‘deforestation, depleted
water supplies, massive fossil fuel consumption, and biodiversity loss’ are all
implicated in the problem of food waste” (Hoek).   As you
can see individuals’ food waste has a big impact on economic as well as
environmental loss.

Individuals
can reduce food waste by adopting good habits to consume food. Adopting good
habits starts by learning to make a plan or shopping lists of food to buy. The United
States Environmental Protection Agency suggests “If you buy no more than what
you expect to use, you will be more likely to keep it fresh and use it all.” Planning
weekly meals and making shopping lists can help to save money and time, and it
supports to eat healthy food. Making a shopping list is a first step that we
should apply in our daily life, but it does not guarantee to reduce food waste.
We also should be mindful to prepare our daily meal plans. A lot of people
throw away so many leftovers because of unplanned or unmeasured meals. Some people
are more likely to cook more than they need which is one of the most common thing
that prduces  food loss. When people cook
too much food, they are not only throwing their leftover food away but their
money as well. Thus, knowing the right portion of your meals is one of the most
important ways to avoid leftovers. According to the article “How to Control
Portions and Reduce Food Waste,” “A Danish survey shows that if the plate size
is reduced by just 9%, the food waste can be reduced by over 25%” (Juul). Therefore,
applying these habits, which is to make a shopping list every time when you go
to shop and be mindful for your meal plan, is one of the ways to reduce
individual food waste.

However, the most important step is to increase
public awareness in order to teach people to adopt good habits. People do not
pay attention to food waste or to adopt some good habits to save food until
they are reminded. Increasing public awareness helps consumers to understand about
the causes of food waste. It also educates people and teaches them the
importance of avoiding food loss. The article “Food Waste Awareness Efforts and
Trends” by McGuire says “Increased awareness of food waste leads to greater
demand for food waste reduction technologies in the household, and can lead to
greater consumer advocacy to see ugly produce in grocery stores, and greater
traceability and transparency of products from farm to fork”. The government
organizations’ and volunteer companies’ cooperation are really needed in this
part because holding campaigns to increase awareness requires a certain amount
of budget.  Using social-media and posters,
and making advertisements on televisions are the most useful ways to spread the
information and to get people’s attention. In that way people will pay more
attention to food loss. Increasing the public’s attention is another
significant way to improve people’s efforts to fight waste and food loss.

Another
way to reduce food waste is to divert it to recycles or recycle the waste or
leftovers at home. One of the common questions is if we already have leftovers what
should we do with that if we do not want to waste it? Sophia Bennett who is a member
of U.K Compost Specialists said that, “like almost everything that goes into
our trash, food is recyclable” (Bennett). She also mentioned that making
compost is one of the easiest ways to recycle at home and our leftovers are a great
resource of compost. Composted food wastes have lots of advantages such as
feeding livestock, allowing gardeners or farmers to use less water and helping
plants to grow better. Composted waste also has a great impact on global
warming. “When food waste breaks down in landfills, it produces methane, which
is a greenhouse gas 72 times more potent than carbon dioxide” (Bennett). Composting
waste at home has lots of benefits instead of just throwing away food waste. However,
if you do not want to recycle it at home try to divert it commercial
facilities. That way both of you and the recycling company can get advantages. As
you can see recycling waste at home, or to send it to recycling companies are
another way to reduce food waste.

The
last way to get rid of food loss is to support food donations. Slivia Gaiani’s
article “Food donations: supporting the most deprived while reducing food waste”
says, “Food donations represent a crucial support for the most deprived and
constitute an effective lever in reducing food waste”. A simple example is we
all have canned or bagged food in our refrigerator or food shelf that we do not
use. Some people just save them hoping to use it one day but sometimes they
just save it until it’s expired. So, they ended up throwing them away once it’s
expired.  It’s so sad that we don’t know
how much food we waste and how many people could eat that food in order to
survive. Even though we can change this situation, which happens to all of us.
Individuals can support local communities, foodbanks, food rescue programs, and
agencies by giving the extra food, even the leftovers from events or from our
homes. This is one of the most efficient ways of saving food waste instead of
throwing them in the trash. Many people want to donate food for those who need food,
but they cannot reach them every time. But, these agencies and charity organizations
can reach the people who are hungry and in need and distribute food to them. Thus,
supporting those volunteer or government organizations by giving our extra food
is one of the best ways of avoiding food loss.

Food
waste is becoming bigger issue in these days that causes economic and
environmental loss. It also truly affects hungry people around the world. The
most of food loss is depending on individuals but they don’t acknowledge it.  Increasing public awareness is an important
way to get people’s attention to food waste. In that way people know they can
solve this problem by taking simple actions such as changing their lifestyle,
supporting recycling, or by donating wasted food.
